Sponge Art Projects

You can create fabulous designs on any of our items using just sponges and red, blue, and yellow acrylic paints. Sorry we do not sell paints and sponges, but please visit your favorite craft or art store. All the examples blend the primary colors to produce the green, orange, and purple colors.

The sponges can be used over and over again to create sophisticated patterns or simple patterns that suit your projects. Kids can use the sponges as easily as adults.

Use both sides of the sponges to create "mirror" images. Since the sponges are flexible you can manipulate them to perfectly align your images.

When cutting out the sponge shapes, try to cut them out in one piece. That way, you can use the outside template as well. Take a look at the Crown Me Throne and you can see that the swirl was used to create the yellow pattern on the feet braces, and the outside template of the swirl was used on the back of the throne to create the pattern in blue.

You can also create a "faux marbleized" effect by sponging with the swirl shape or a plain circle shape in one color, and then sponge over it with the same shaped sponge using a different color. Apply the second color before the first color is dry so they slightly blend.

Another idea is to "frame" your sponge shape with a different color. Look at the doors of the TuDoor Armoire and you can see the swirl shape in red, while the outside template of the swirl shape creates the orange frame. Since the sponges can be manipulated by hand, it is easy to position the frame shape around the inside shape.
