Bug
Houses Gone Crazy
Materials:
Our Ovalette
frames take on a new job as the end caps to
a roomy spa for visiting bugs! This simple project
will leave plenty of time for the hunt!
- 1 Ovalettes #30044* Mixed
Nuts
*set of 3
ovals, one extra for a trophy photo of your favorite
Bug Hunter!
- One sheet of fun foam-
12" X 18"
- Foam glue
- Stapler
- One piece of vinyl window
screen- 13 1/2" x 6"
(could use plastic canvas)
- One Pipe cleaner, cut in
half
Prep: Punch out and color images onto the
ovalettes. Suggestion: The center small oval is
the bug door, you can make this a small bug (lady
bug, spider, caterpillar) and the outer ring its
environment; make the center an apple and the surrounding
ring a caterpillar. Think of themes, such as a bug
house, island, hotel or observatory.
To make door handles, slide
pipe cleaner through the side fluting of the small
oval and twist ends to make a loop. Do it to both
ovals.
To make foam frame, fold foam
sheet in half and cut, making two 6" x 18"
rectangles. Fold this in half, creating a 6"
x 9" rectangle and make 3 cuts (refer to fig.
1), approximately 5/8" away from edge. Open
up to find a frame. Save center rectangle for decorations
on bug box.
Assembly:
Center screen in foam frame. Run glue around entire
perimeter of foam frame and over screening. (refer
to Fig. 2) Center colored ovalettes on their long
sides*, the edge of the ovalette, lined up with
the foam frame edge. (The foam covers the cardboard
edge.) First fold up screening and dab a bit of
glue to hold it in place. Bring up foam handles,
matching sides. Staple handles where foam meets
at cardboard and across handle top.
